Album Review: Silent Future

I’ll start by saying I’m not much of a writer. I love listening to music, so these are my thoughts, and the words I use could potentially be used incorrectly. Anyway, that’s my disclaimer.

I grabbed a couple of CDs from REZN when I saw them play with Elder about a month ago – show review here. One of them was their latest album, which is a collaboration with Vinnum Sabbathi titled Silent Future. Overall, this is a great album with great flow. The songs easily go from one to the next without notice.

Silent Future by REZN & Vinnum Sabbathi

I love the ambient opener Born Into Catatonia. It has an almost lack of rhythm, which I dig with the synth sounds going on. There is some spoken word in this track and a few others, and it works well. The song flows right into the next track, Unknown Ancestor, seamlessly. Some of the opening guitar work made me think of Mr. Peter Hayden (or whatever moniker the band uses now).

To me, this album is a strong doom-gazey or doom-psych kind of sound. It has the heavy elements nicely mixed with the softer, spacier sounds. Hyper Surreal and Clusters are dome other standout tracks on this record.

I became a REZN fan at the show with Elder, and this album solidifies that. I forget what the other REZN CD I grabbed was titled, but I’ll definitely get to it.
