Review: T.A.P – Paradigms

The CD for T.A.P’s new album, Paradigms, showed up in my mailbox the other day. So I’ve listened to it over the weekend and have these bits of words to share on it. Full disclosure: my friend Mr. Cook plays on this album, but I won’t hold that against the rest of the band, haha!

T.A.P – Paradigms

Infinite Names starts off the album. This is an apt name for this opener bordering on 12 minutes. The song seamlessly makes its way through several different genres of music, blending ambient sounds with prog, blues, and somewhat lounge-ish type sounds. Kind of an infinity of styles.

The album as a whole doesn’t necessarily have a theme, but musically the pieces seem bound together with a mellow tone. The ambient sounds going on tie thus album together very well. I love the keys on the record, as it makes me think of (not necessarily sound like) Frank Zappa’s The Grand Wazoo. The keys on the album give it that 70s vibe without trying to sound retro. The guitar work is great as well. The playing blends in with the compositions and feeds off the feel of them so very well. And the bass dies very well stitching the pieces together.

Favorite track for me is Initiate Protocol 7. Nice slow, mellow start with a soundscape in the background and a meandering guitar followed by piano slowly building to the heart of the track. Then it just sails from there.

Definitely recommend.
