Influences

The two bands that likely influence the music of Slow Draw the most are Earth and Negativland. I’m sure there are other significant ones, but these are top of mind at the moment.

Escape from Noise by Negativland

I started listening to Negativland in the early 90s. Escape from Noise was my introduction, and it has stuck with me since. I love what they can do with found sounds, field recordings, other people’s recordings, and whatever else they can get their hands on. It’s even more impressive to think when they started in the 70s that all of this was done by hand, i.e. actually cutting audio tape and splicing together. Can’t imagine how tedious that was.

They are also known for culture jamming. This is the practice of subverting media, mainstream culture, and consumerism. I think you could throw politics in there too. “It’s thought provoking, even humorous”, or so that’s how I remember the sound bite.

Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull by Earth.

I think Earth’s Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull is the best heavy and slow album there is. That’s my opinion, so we don’t need to argue about it. You don’t need distorted out guitars or fuzz to create a heavy sounding song. Earth does it with composition and repetition. Front to back, this album delivers and put me on my own quest to write songs with weight.

You can hear Earth in some of my songs, but hopefully it comes across as an influence and not a ripoff. I know nothing I create sounds like Negativland, because they are just too out there to reproduce.
