Show Recap: Elder and Tool

My oldest son and I went to the Tool/Elder show at American Airlines Center in Dallas on February 2nd. Overall, it was a good time. Here is my attempt at a review. Note: I’m horrible at song titles, so don’t expect a setlist from me.

Son and Father

We arrived a little after 6pm for a 7:30pm show. I had intended on buying a shirt or something, but the Tool shirts started at $50. So, I abandoned that quest, and I did not see any Elder merch. Can’t say I looked all that hard, but the concourse was filling up, and the merch lines were getting real long. So, we went to our seats.

I’m cheap, so I got nosebleed level seats at the top. Still $100 a pop after fees, plus paying half that for parking. Sorry, I’m bitching about prices, but that’s part of the experience!

We waited another hour before Elder took the stage. They played about a 40-minute set. Great set, and kind of surreal seeing a band I’ve been listening to since 2009 or so. The first time I saw them was in Dallas at the Doublewide. They went from playing to 20 people to 20,000 or whatever this place holds. The only downside was the volume. Not as loud as I wanted, based on seeing them in smaller venues. Tool was louder, so I assume it was intentional, but for what reason who knows.

Tool played for roughly 2 hours. Great set, but Schism was the only song I recognized. I don’t know that I own any of their albums, but I dig their music. They had great visuals, and are what you would expect to see from them on an aesthetic level. They did allow filming on their last song of the night. There was a strict no recording policy for this show. I wish they had a strict no vaping policy, yeesh!
