Negativland

Last weekend, I watched the Negativland documentary on YouTube.

Since the 90s, I’ve been a fan. A friend had purchased a cassette of Escape from Noise, and I found it to be extremely interesting and cool. It was a stark contrast to the things I was listening to at the time, such as Slayer, Fugazi, Jane’s Addiction, and other metal and alternative music. I think the only link was that this album came out on SST Records, home of Black Flag and the Descendants, which I was also into at the time.

I enjoyed the Stanby for Failure documentary. The way it was created/edited, to me, was very complimentary to the way Negativland created their works. Not your typical narrated flick or current day interviews looking back, just a chronological walk through the history of the band with footage and noise from those times.

I’ve always wanted to create music that had some of their influence worked in. I think some of my releases have that, but I’m looking to blend it in, now, in a way that doesn’t seem like a copy. Essentially, I am looking to take that influence and merge it with the way I naturally write music.

I have an idea of how that will work, so standby.
