I was flip-flopping on whether to go to this show. Just the agony of getting myself to go around people, especially on a weeknight. I get up early for work, bleh. I ended up ordering a ticket over the weekend, as I knew that would be the only way to get myself to go. If I’m financially liable, then I can’t back out. Wah-wah!

Mute Duo was the opener. I’m not sure how much I missed, but they had already started by the time I got to Tulips. I assume it was to soon after the start since they played a decent length set.
As the name implies, they are a duo, featuring drums and lap steel guitar. While there were some accents in their music you’d expect to hear when you think lap steel, most of it was not that at all. For me, they had a strong Zombi energy or vibe. Not how they sounded, but more of how they approach their music. There was an instance that had a nice Earth feel as well. I’ll just say I dig what they are doing and look forward to hearing more.

My “I have to work tomorrow” subconscious was happy that it was a two band bill, though there could have been many bands that paired well with Rezn (cough, Elder, cough). Rezn played not too long after Mute Duo left the stage. Glad I drug myself out. I don’t remember song names for shit, so I don’t know the set list. To me, Rezn is like a metal/doom version of Pink Floyd. That’s the impression their performances have given me.
Just an observation, but they did seem to tune instruments between every song. Looks like they were playing on aluminum neck guitars, so maybe the Texas heat is too much for those. Pffff.
