Show Recap: Cortége, Darsombra, and King Turtle

Decided to mosey on up to Denton to catch this show. Mainly to support the folks in Cortége, but to also catch Darsombra, which I’ve wanted to do for a while.

Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios (the venue)

King Turtle opened the show. I was not familiar with the band before this. Facebook says they are math rock for dummies, and that’s if I looked at the right page. I’m not sure I agree with the tagline, but maybe it is close. Their set was OK. I didn’t connect with the music, but they have some well crafted songs and tight playing. The last song was a banger, though.

Darsombra took a minute to set up, but it was well worth the wait. I was looking forward to their set, and I’m not sure why I waited this long to catch them. The whole set was a psychic trip, and the visuals were fantastic. The sound was a bit too bass heavy at first, but it evened out after a while.

My friends in Cortége rounded out the evening. It was awesome to hear their heavy spaghetti western style music in person. To me, it’s a mix of Earth, Ennio Morricone, and Angelo Badalamenti. Well-timed compositions with the perfect amount of negative space and a mild amount of twang. I may be tired from losing sleep to go, but it was worth it.

Maybe I can talk them into dragging Slow Draw out with them on a run of shows next time.
