Albums of 2024

I haven’t done a good job this year of keeping tracks of new music I’ve listened to. Fortunately, Bandcamp has my purchases sorted by latest purchase, I am able to see some history through Spotify, and I can always trust The Obelisk to remind me of things I’ve listened to via JJ’s list.

So, here’s my top 20 albums of 2024. I’ve reviewed some of these if you care to read:

20: Lord Buffalo- Holus Bolus

19: Red Mesa- Partial Distortions

18: Wormsand – You, The King

17: Yoo Doo Right- From the Heights of Our Pastureland

16: Low Flying Hawks- Make Believe

15: Heavy Temple – Garden of Heathens

14: High Desert Queen- Palm Reader

13:  Land Mammal- Emergence

12:  Early Moods- A Sinner’s Past

11:  Sundrifter- An Earlier Time

10:  Breaking Light- A Night in Terlingua

9:  Mark Cook/Steven Leak- Ekstasis

8:  One-Eyed Monsters- Ambrosia

7:  Longheads – Layers of Wax

6: Delving- All Paths Diverge

5: Cortége- Under the Endless Sky

Cortége is one of those rare bands that make me think of Earth and Angelo Badalamenti. Expansive sound and mood setting themes.

4: Destroyer of Light- Degradation Years

I’ve been catching Destroyer of Light for years. They are always delving further into their sound and bringing the heavy I enjoy. Glad I caught them on their final tour. I’m sure I’ll see all of those gents in some of their new bands.

3: Big|Brave- A Chaos of Flowers

I’ve yet to see Big|Brave live, but hopefully, I can catch them next time they come through. Love the vocal structures and minimalist heft of their sound. Heavy and delicate mixed together.

2: Earth Tongue- Great Haunting

I lazily missed the duo of Earth Tongue when they made their way to the states for a few dates. Ended up not wanting to drive to Austin. Oh well, at least I got this album to keep me entertained. Love the arrangements and the retro-but-new sound.

1: Zombi – Direcct Inject

If one band dominated my listening this year, it was Zombi. This duo combines a lot of things I love into their output. Synthesizers, doom, instrumentals, prog rock, ambient, and  great drumming. Hope to catch these gents live one day.

Thanks for checking out my music year in review. Looking forward to hearing more and also releasing my own.
