Show Recap: Russian Circles & Pelican

Rubber Gloves in Denton

Finding parking in Denton for this show wasn’t fun, but it wasn’t terrible. Probably could have gotten here sooner if I didn’t have to take a shit right when I was about to head out.

Pelican

Pelican started the show with a nice 55-minute set. I’ve heard of them but never listened to their music. Google describes them as atmospheric post-metal. Based on this show, that is pretty accurate. Pelican is an instrumental band, and the mood they set is slightly apocalyptic in a mellow way, but with a smack of hope dashed in. Maybe it’s my mood and mind at the moment, but it did come across as hopeful. Weird on my part, maybe.

Russian Circles

After a brief changeover and light test, Russian Circles took the stage. I saw them several years back at RBC with Helms Alee. Just as then, they put on a great show. Still in the same post-metal vein, but it’s a bit heavier. Their sound is also less emotional feeling and more chuggy riffs. No complaints there! Great dynamics in song structures, and I dig the ambient noise between songs as they tune their guitars. The show was outside, and it dropped to 40° from the feel of it. I’m sure the stringed instruments didn’t like that.

This is the first part of the tour, so go catch it if they come through your area.
