Mr. Cook and I went to the Earth show last night at Rubber Gloves in Denton. It was a fantastic show!

Steve Moore, or Stebmo, did an opening set in addition to playing keys and trombone with Earth (far right in the photo above). He just walked up on stage and started playing an Alice Coltrane tune, followed by another cover song. Then, he went into a kind of dissertation on sound and how it relates to people, relationships, and all things in between. Or something like that, I’m paraphrasing what he said since I can’t eloquently convey his message. It made sense and was engaging. He followed that with one last song. Apologies, I don’t recall if that was a cover song as well. Either way, his playing was captivating and very enjoyable.

After a short break, Earth walked on stage, introduced the band members, and went straight into Hex. This tour was all about playing this album, and we got to hear it front to back. Only a minor stall after Mirage, the first song, so that Adrian could put a block at her high hat stand to keep it from moving.
Hearing Hex like this was awesome, even if it took me a minute to zone out the chatty folks behind me. I thoroughly enjoyed the slow, sparse soundscapes created and accented when a hefty back on the floor tom accentuated that steady pace. To close out the show, they played one new song, Scalpers Blues (?) and Old Black.
Sounds like I’ll be on the lookout for a live album later this year and a new one next year based on the news they shared.
