Drum Recording

So, I’m working on a microphone setup for recording drums. This will be fun, and I’m sure someone will tell me I’m doing it wrong. Don’t care, lol.

Studio time

I have an old drum microphone kit. Don’t remember the brand off hand, but I’m sure it was a $100 set when I bought it over 10 years ago. It works. But, I’m not using it since it is a traditional setup for just the shells.

I’m going with a Glyn Johns-ish setup. Going to mic the kick and the snare, and then one up high over the snare and one to the side of the floor tom.

I’ve got a ribbon microphone on the left high position. It sounds realty good to my ears, and captures the cymbals nicely. I have it at an angle pointed at the other mic. I may aim it more between the toms to see how that sounds.

The microphone next to the floor tom is currently an SM57 knockoff. It sounds good, but it picks up the drums more than the cymbals. So, I’ve ordered another ribbon microphone in hopes that I can stereo them for a fuller sound.

I’ve got one Slow Draw tune I’ll use this to record, unless I decide to stick with how it is now. I’ll flip-flop on that a few times, probably. I do plan to record a bunch of Headeraser stuff soon, so I need to balance it out well for that.

Looking to have more music released this year.
