Instrumental post-rockers In a House of Heartbeats recently released their latest endeavor, Divination of Dreams, through Ripcord Records. This is my first listen to the trio from Essex, UK’s music.

Divination of Dreams delivers and drips with post-rock tinged with metal. The mood of the album sways from melancholy to a held back anger feeling, and on to a subtle feeling of acceptance. Being an instrumental band, it does give off that cinematic vibe, especially with the voice samples.
The guitar is obviously a big driver in the sound and feeling in the music. But, the use of overdrive/distortion on the bass at select moments enhances and alters the intent of the song. That simple gesture adds to the vibe or makes the feeling of the song all that more complex.
The drumming on Divination of Dreams is a great example of drumming for the song. Depending upon the song or the part, the drums can be going full double-bass, to subtle and in the pocket, or not at all to let the atmosphere of the song build up and come in at just the right time and intensity.
If you’re a fan of Russian Circles, Pelican, or Mono, you’ll dig In a House of Heartbeats. Favorite track: A Head Full of Ghosts– I dig the sort of glitch sound in it.
