Rethinking Music Collecting

Exactly what it sounds like. Since I’ve been devouring, or attempting to, new music regularly, it makes me contemplate how I’m adding some of this to my “collection”.

Records and CDs

I’ve always been a physical media person for the most part. It is usually the out of country bands that usually push me to do digital downloads because of shipping costs. It’s hard to pay more for an album when it costs more to ship it than what the album costs. I’m frugal, as they say.

I want to support all the bands I dig, so if I like an album, I buy it. But with all the new music, and also old, I question if I should be buying all of it in physical media. I do listen to records, tapes, and CDs. But most of my day to day listening is through my phone because I’m either at work or in the car. Evenings and weekends I will put on a physical album.

I think in future purchases I may be more picky about what format I purchase for an album. I know for some bands I may have to decide before I’m able to hear it for fear of it selling out in the case of vinyl. I’m sometimes a sucker for funky cassette stuff. Eh, I’ll likely never figure it out.
