I’ve been looking forward to this album. The New Zealand duo have that retro but fresh sound in their tone and songwriting.

I regret not catching Earth Tongue the two times they were “nearby”. Once was the Stoner Jam in Austin a few years ago. I don’t remember why I didn’t go. And last year, they were in Oklahoma with Electric Citizen. I was planning to drive up for that one, but a work deadline coincided with it, and it just wasn’t working out how I wanted it, so…
Sorry to bore with my personal struggles.
Dungeon Vision is a further step in Earth Tongue’s journey. Their sound is well defined as a duo of guitar and drums. And the vocals are always a highlight, especially when they’re both singing. I love that sound.
Earth Tongue maintain their vibe in Dungeon Vision. Retro fuzzy guitars over funky drum beats. Not funky in that 70s kind of way. It is more my lackluster description of how the beats and fills work around and with the riffs. It’s not straightforward unless it wants to be, and accents in just the right spots.
Stand out tracks for me are Symmetry Dripper, Silver Eye, and Ritual. Symmetry Dripper is a synth driven instrumental that makes me think of Zombi without sounding like Zombi. I dig the heaviness of Silver Eye. And Ritual ends with that awesome vocal and just drops off, making you want to flip the record back over and start again.
I suggest you do better than me and catch them live if you can.
