The first time I saw Sleep it was here at The Granada Theater, probably 10 years ago. I don’t remember the exact year at the moment. But it was before The Sciences was released.
Staring at the advertising projection screens, I find myself noticing the shakiness of the video. I don’t know if it’s bad video, or the screen shaking, or something else. Either way, I find myself fixated on it and the random 80s TV show screen shots they have going on. Stuff from HR Puff-n-stuff, the Muppets, or Pee-Wee Herman. Kind of creepy with the minimalist waiting music they have playing.
After the wait, Pink Moutaintops kicked open the show. The set started out great with a trance type Pink Floyd vibe with how the programmed drums sounded. After that, it was more of an 80s/90s rock vibe. More straight forward songs in a pseudo singer/songwriter way.
After a set changeover, Sleep came out with the heavy. Their well over an hour set was a mix of Holy Mountain and Hempispheres, kicking it off with Holy Mountain before running through the songs on the new album.
The highlight for me was Mr Dale Crover. From my perspective, he carried the show. Locked in and carried any tempo that was set. Dragonaut was played slower than I ever heard it, almost too slow. Anyway, Dale’s playing fits, but you can also tell it is him playing.
Good show, glad I made it out. Saw one of you out there (hey Britt!). Basically planted myself in one spot when I got there, so if there were more of you there, awesome!
